About Sifu Gregory Fong

Gregory Fong was born in Canton, China and raised in Hong Kong. He began training in the mid-60's studying Wu style t'ai chi for five years. In addition, he learned Northern Shaolin from Sifu Yim Sheung Mo in Hong Kong (currently he is not teaching this style). Also in Hong Kong, Sifu Fong learned 7-Star Northern Praying Mantis kung fu from Sifu Chan Yin Yee (senior disciple of Sifu Luo Guang Yu and senior classmate of Sifu Wong Hon Fun).

At the age of 19, he moved to the United States. Subsequently, his pursuit of martial arts studies included, among others, Yang and Chen T'ai Chi, Luk-Hop-Ba-Fa, Chi Kung, Hsing-I, Pa-Kua and I-Chuan. Sifu Fong is one of very few non-natives who have lived in Chen Village, China (the birthplace of t'ai chi) and studied with the Chen masters there.

He also had the honor to study I-Chuan under Master Yu Yong Nian of Beijing, China. Master Yu was a top student of the renowned founder of I-Chuan, Wang Hsiang Chai. Sifu Fong has been fortunate to learn from some of the best I-Chuan masters in Beijing, namely Wang Yu Fang (Master Wang's daughter), Master Li Jian Yu (Master Wang's student) and Master Po Jar Chung. Sifu Fong teaches I-Chuan fundamentals in all his classes. He now teaches a special class devoted solely to I-Chuan training.

In 1989, Sifu Fong won first place in the international t'ai chi/kung fu tournaments in San Francisco and Vancouver, BC. That same year, he won the "All-Around Championship" title in the U.S. All-T'ai Chi Tournament in Virginia, and the title "West Coast Champion of the Year" in the Seattle Karate Tournament using Chen T'ai Chi. Sifu Fong has been teaching T'ai Chi and Kung Fu in Portland, Oregon since 1970.
